Pangaea's Theory Of Plate Tectonics

Improved Essays
The continents were once part of a single landmass called Pangaea but then a force caused the continents to move them apart. The first piece of evidence used for this theory was that Africa and South America fitted together like it was a jigsaw puzzle. The next piece of evidence was that in South America and Africa there are fossils found in rocks of the same age and type. Additionally, in those two landmasses, there are corresponding early mammal fossils found. Again, there are identical reptile fossils in Africa and South America. One example of a reptile is Mesosaurus. This reptile was found in both Brazil and South Africa. Coincidentally, matching plant fossils were also found in Australia, Africa, India, South America, and Antarctica. …show more content…
The second to last piece of evidence is that matching rock types and mountain belts are located in North America and the British Isle, which is a group of islands near Europe. In addition, Coal, which forms in tropical areas, has been found in Arctic islands. Moreover, coal beds also stretch across the eastern United States and continue plus parts of Europe. This theory started with the realization that Africa and South America's coastlines fit like jigsaw puzzles. The evidence of fossils, plants, glaciers, and other evidence was then added to the theory. Fossils in South America and Africa are found in rocks of identical rocks. Harold Jeffreys argued that it was physically impossible If this specific rock was found in both landmasses, that means that Africa and South America must've been connected

The story of Sue is greatly significant to paleontology. Her skeleton is a great contribution to the science and research of Tyrannosaurus rex and her legal case is also greatly significant to paleontology as a practice. Sue’s story changed the way paleontologists excavate fossils and how people see Tyrannosaurus rex. Although Sue ended up in the wrong hands after court, millions of people come from all over the world to see and research her at the Field Museum in Chicago and her impact on the paleontological world can still be seen today.…

Avalon was believed to have broke apart from Proto-Africa. When Baltica hit North America, the mountain range created when the Avalon and the Iapetus Ocean rocks got piled up was located in the northeast. The collision of the Northeastern part of North America and Baltica didn’t really affect the southern coast until part of Avalon called the Carolina Terrane hit the southern part. These collisions caused the rocks to be metamorphosed. North America and Baltica at this time were located near the equator and North America was moving…

Over two hundred millions of years ago, the continents were once Pangaea. As time went by Pangaea spreaded apart into seven different continents. Before 1492, the New World was divided from the rest of the world. The voyages of explorers like Christopher Columbus introduced trading from the Old World into the New World. The reestablishment of connections between Europe and North America such as plants, animals, viruses, and bacteria, is known as the Columbian Exchange.…

The connection between Australia, South America, and the southern tip of Africa can be seen by the similar plants that inhabit the areas, such as the tree-waratahs that can be found both in Australia and in Chile, or the marsupials that can only be found in Australia and parts of South America.12 160 million years ago, Australia was attached to Gondwana and positioned at least partially below the Antarctic circle. 80 million years ago it began to separate and move north and eastward. 45 million years ago it began to separate from Antarctica and New Zealand. The continental plate was completely separate by 40 million years ago, forming the landmasses of Tasmantis (New Zealand and surrounding islands) and Meganesia (Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea).12 Australia moved overall at just the right pace to keep its diversity intact, not moving too fast but just fast enough to avoid the formation of…

Archaologists have only found skeletal remains of Homo sapiens in the New World, however Homo erectus and previous life forms have been found in the old world, implying that Homo sapiens crossed into the New World in the time of the ice age. The only explanation as to how the migration occurred is a land bridge connecting Northeast Asia to Alaska, however there is no land connecting the two in present day, only a strait that is fifty six miles wide at its narrowest point, and approximately 180 feet deep. However, scientists have discovered that the water levels at the time of the migration would have been significantly lower due to the large quantities of water that were trapped in the ice caps; furthermore, the bottom of the Bering Strait…

America has been a continent found in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. When the discovery of America occurred three intercultural continents were able to interact with each other. These continents joined together to become stronger and soon be interdependent. Europe, America and Africa are three continent that were able to unite and differ politically, socially and culturally.…

To verify the Out of Africa Theory, the fossils found in Africa needs to show presence of Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo sapien in the right sequence and time period. Examining morphological features such as the facial structure and skeletal structure can help correctly classify these fossils in the correct taxon. The fossils that need to be found outside of Africa need to be predominantly Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapien because the Out of Africa theory claims that dispersal occurred after the evolution of Homo sapiens. However, if the fossil record outside of Africa contains evidence of Homo erectus fossils, then the theory may lose some its validity. This type of analysis assumes that that there is a binary outcome that would either validate or support either…
