Cell Signalling and Disease Project: Pancreatic Cancer
Symptoms of pancreatic cancer are rarely visible until the disease reaches an advanced stage, which contributes to the low survival rate (six percent). When symptoms are present, they include body pain (specifically in the torso or middle back), nausea, fatigue, blood clotting, dark urine, weight loss, and yellowing on the skin and eyes. This disease very rarely afflicts people under the age of forty-five, although it is possible. Although pancreatic cancer is barely in the top ten most common cancer diagnoses, it is the fourth deadliest. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is the most common type on pancreatic tumor, and is the cause of ninety-five percent on pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) is a rare and aggressive tumor that has worse prognosis and higher metastatic potential than pancreatic adenocarcinoma(Kardon, Thompson et al. 2001, Boyd, Benarroch-Gampel et al. 2012). A major hindrance towards development of therapies against pancreatic ASC is that no unique molecular signature has been identified for this class of pancreatic tumors. Although KRAS and TP53 are altered in pancreatic ASC (Brody, Costantino et al. 2009), the same genes are also abnormal in other forms of pancreatic cancer.…

The other less common subtypes include: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm with an associated invasive carcinoma, mucinous cystic neoplasms with an associated invasive carcinoma, solid-pseudopapillary neoplasms, acinar cell carcinoma, pancreatoblastoma, and serous cystadenocarcinoma5. These other malignant pancreatic cancers only account for 1-2 percent of all pancreatic cancers 5. As stated above, the cancer generally does not present itself clinically until it is quite advanced due to the insidious nature of the cancer. In our patient, the only symptoms that the patient presented with were those associated with obstruction of the common bile duct; pain was never a concern. This presentation of pancreatic cancer is actually favorable since it allowed us to quickly obtain the correct tests and identify that an underlying cancer was most likely present.…

Based off a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Women’s Fitness website claims that a decrease in the amount of red meat and dairy products consumed can reduce your risk of developing pancreatic cancer in an article titled “Animal Fat Linked to Pancreatic Cancer”. After the study and claim were both evaluated, this argument turns out to be inductively weak. The study conducted is a good study as it was a controlled study with one variable. However, the sample used to conduct the study does not seem to be very representative. According to Russel a good sample is one that is both large and representative [1].…

What is acute pancreatitis? According to Buttaro, Trybulski, Bailey, and Sandberg-Cook (2013), acute pancreatitis is a very sudden, severe, painful, and excruciating stomach ache due to the inflammatory process of the pancreas. The vulnerability and presentation of acute pancreatitis may vary among the different populations. A typical patient experiencing acute pancreatitis will exhibit severe upper abdominal pain that may intensify with breathing, resulting in patients being reluctant to take a deep breath. Most patients will describe this severe pain as a constant, knife-like, poorly localized abdominal pain that radiates to the back in about 50% of patients.…

The main function of the pancreas is producing two types of substances; digestive juices and digestive hormones, to regulate the body. These digestive juices are used to neutralize gastric acid secretion. The pancreas is also responsible for releasing insulin to help aid in regulating the blood. Whenever the pancreas becomes inflamed, it is termed as pancreatitis.…
