A qilin is known as a mythical creature made in a chimera-like form, consisting of ox, deer, or a horse. These creatures are also cascaded in scale and fire, like a Chinese dragon. Represented as peaceful and gentle, the qilins are a wonderful sign of an outstanding leader. Along with this, the eastern dragon was also mentioned, due to the different interpretation of the western dragon. This was because in the west dragons were seen as mindless monsters that demolished villages. However, eastern dragons were promoted as intelligent and noble.
This particular Chinese myth was estimated to have been formed in 200 CE, by a Taoist monk named Xu Zheng during a time period known as “Three Kingdoms” in China. Scholars are unsure if this was an ancient myth passed down in southern China around an estimated one thousand years ago, or if pieces of westerns myths have been connected to create this one-of-a-kind story.
