Symbols in UAE folklore

The palm tree (nakhlah), coffee pot (dallah), and censer (mubkhar or midkhan), camel (jamal), talli, and houses (tents), are key symbols of the traditional life unique to the emirates society that proves its ability to withstand rapid changes.

First, the Palm tree (nakhlah) is an important part of survival in UAE, the oldest seed found on Delma Island back to 5100 BC.
There are 44 million tree in UAE, of which 8.5 million only in Al Ain City. Palm tree represent the symbol of food and water, it also have many characterstics: it’s always green its varied in size and length its fruits are seasonal and are rich of high nutritional value

People beliefs that the palm tree is blessed and it brings good and blessing to the family or society. Therefore, many of Emirati families are very concerned with planting and taking care of palm trees.

Serving coffee follows a ritual where body language plays an important rule. When serving coffee, the muqahwi (host) should bend forward to serve it to the guest, holding wallah by his left hand while pouring into the cups held in his right hand. The cup should not be filled up but instead it should be approximately one third full. When the guest finishes drinking, he act in two ways. If he wants more, he keeps the cup in his hand, but if he is satisfied or does not want more, he tilts the empty cup quickly back and forth 4 to 5 times. The must not put the coffee cup on the ground or tray, but must hands it to the host accompanied with phrases of gratitude and thankfulness.
Usually, the coffee is served with fuwala, and permanently found in the house’s majlis or living room, in case of surprising guest.

Third, the censer (mubkar) is a pot made of pottery or metal. It is locally used for various purposes ranging from warding off evil eye to keeping the house clean and protected. There are two types used in UAE, ‘ud, which is a powder made by women usually have a round or rectangular shape, the other type is a mixture of aromatic material like musk, sandal-wood, and amber.
