Opioid painkillers have become an alarming concern to authorities due to the recent theft of these medications at pharmacies where the drug was the only thing being sought in the theft. Approval by the FDA is not necessary for these to be purchased by consumers. The only way the FDA can have a dietary supplement removed after it is marketed is to prove that it is not safe or is misrepresented. There is minimum direction sought by a physician by people using them, as people are instead diagnosing and treating themselves with information they find about illnesses and believe that herbs or dietary supplements are natural, effective, and safe alternatives to taking prescribed medications (NIH 3,5). Dietary supplements especially vitamins can be very good substitutes when a person is not getting vital nutrients like those contained in fruits and vegetables and other daily resources. Furthermore, most university technology transfer officerswho have different motivations from individual researchers-are not focused on increasing public access to public-sector inventions. A recent study found that "university technology transfer activities continue to be predominately patent-centric and revenue-driven with a single-minded focus on generating licensing income and obtaining reimbursement for legal expenses. " Current Bayh-Dole patenting and licensing practices have thus been criticized for creating unnecessary increases in consumer prices and for creating patent hold-ups and a patent "anticommons." Prescription drugs are responsible for more deaths annually than illegal drugs (Mercola). Ironically, the thing that is supposed to help individuals with their health concerns is actually killing them instead. This is the result of patients receiving prescriptions with the doctor’s expertise. On the other hand, if individuals were permitted to receive medication upon request, regardless of their symptoms or lack thereof, then the consequences would be dire.…

According to prescription data from the IMS Health, “at the beginning of 2006, there were 47 million prescriptions dispensed per quarter in the United States for the opioid analgesics included in this study. Prescription volume peaked in the fourth quarter of 2012 at 62 million prescriptions dispensed.” (Dart). This increase in prescription directly relates to the substance’s abuse as “the rate of prescription opioid abuse increased from 1.6 per 100,000 population in 2005 to 7.3 in 2010” (Dart). Campaigns addressing health concerns, organised by pharmaceutical companies, commonly align with the release of a new drug to the market to treat the health concern. Since new treatment drugs often spend years in the approval stage and undergo many trials to ensure consumer safety, it makes no sense that marketing campaigns produce the demand for drugs. It would be nonsensical and uneconomical for a pharmaceutical company to produce drugs for which they need to create their own market. Ultimately, consumers decide which conditions are requiring of treatment.…

In the world of psychiatry nearly all drugs in use today were created between 1950 and 1969. It’s hard to imagine with so many drug commercials on TV revealing new and groundbreaking products, that the same products being advertised today were actually created based on chemistry performed more than 60 years ago (Klein, p.259, 2014). The reason behind this is simple. The creation of new drugs based on finding new molecular entities is extremely costly. For the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to approve a new drug to market costs can exceed 5 billion dollars and can take as long as 15 years to satisfy the criteria for safe and effective (Marston, 2013).…

Increased abuse of prescription opioids has correlated to an increase in the use of harder street drugs in areas that you wouldn’t except. Besides aiding with their medical use, narcotics can produce a general sense of well being by reducing tension, anxiety, and aggression.
