A nurse can use several pain assessment tools that include initial pain assessment, the brief pain inventory, the short- form McGill Pain Questionnaire, PQRST method of pain assessment, pain-rating scales, numeric rating scales, verbal descriptor scale, visual analogue scale, and the descriptor scale. Then for a infants a nurse would depend on the patient's behavioral and physiologic cues, and when assessing a two year old the nurse would be able to rely on the patient to point to the location of the pain and report that they are having pain.
