Pablo Picasso's Three Musicians

The elements used to describe Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso include line, shape, color, and value. This picture displays many irregular lines. This is done to display a picture straying from the ordinary image one would have of musicians. The lines mainly appear organic, like the line in the face of the middle musician because he is not proportionate and the instrument the left musician is playing. Shape can be seen both organic and geometric in this image to unite the musicians together. The organic shape make it seem unique, while the few geometric lines makes the image appear organized. Color can be seen in this image to give each musician their form. The first musician is has three colors black, white, and blue. This color make the person seem relaxed. Contrast can be seen in the colors in each of the musician’s body. Like the middle musicians bright colors contrast with the darker colors to the right and left. Unity can be seen in the way the whole piece look different, but able to look similar at the same time. This is called conceptual unity, the ability of the artist to make the musicians have their own unique characteristic but still have a common idea. The next principle of art is variety, which is about “uniqueness and diversity” (Dewitte 122). Each musicians has different characteristics such as lines, shapes, and colors. This makes each one different and makes the image have new and fresh look, as opposed to an image that is boring by being all the same. The last principle of art displayed is balance. This can been seen by each musician complementing each other. Like the musicians on the sides, which are more solid colored balance the musician in the middle, which is more vibrant and bright colored.
