So, my person of choice is Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. I chose him because he came from nothing in the slums of Colombia to become one of the most successful well-known politicians/narcos of his time and current times. He was one of those people that was able to turn dirty drug money into clean money by donating it to charities and to soccer teams in Colombia. When he first started he was just trafficking cigarettes but as his empire grew a few already successful narcos got him in the cocaine game. Within just a few months he was making millions a day. By the mid-1980’s he had a total net worth of about $30 billion and was named one of the 10 richest people on Earth by Forbes. As his power grew he started to see himself as a leader and in some ways like Robin Hood because he was spending mass amounts of money to expand social programs for the poor. But with his surrender came a few conditions, first he was to not be extradited to the US he was to be allowed to build his own luxurious prison at the top of a mountain that the authorities could not come within a certain distance of as long as Pablo was inside. In June 1992 Escobar escaped when the authorities had attempted to move his to a more conditional prison facility. With his escape came a 16-month man hunt for the drug lord. As Pablo was in prison and on the run for those short 16 month the Medellin Cartel had started to crumble when other leaders of the cartel were also murdered. That cause the cartel to quickly deteriorate to no longer have any hold anywhere with any drugs.
