PLC Summary

After analyzing the data, it is evident that the school has a skeleton of a PLC. The staff is willing to hear new ideas, however, there is not a strong enough leadership to start implementing the ideas. The focus of this design will be a math PLC with three different grade levels. There will be one kindergarten teacher, one first grade teacher, one second grade teacher, one third grade teacher, two fourth grade teachers, one fifth grade teacher and one member of the ILT (instructional lead teacher). This PLC will focus on the shared personal practice that correlates with math instruction. With the new leadership of Mary B. Neal, we have been told we will be moving to a guided math instructional block. However, many staff members are unfamiliar with this process within the classroom. The PLC will provide insight to this process so that it can be implemented school-wide. Staff members will be able to peer observe educators who are implementing a guided math block effectively. The PLC will focus on how often the peer observations will occur and how to monitor the effectiveness of the observations. In order to develop an effective approach to guided math, the principal sent several staff members to a guided math conference in the fall. According to Ullman (2009) it is important for the group to work together toward a common goal. Since the school is requiring all staff members to teach math instruction with guided math, the PLC will focus on this along with the weakness of shared personal practice. PLC members will come from a variety of grades to help the implementation process of guided math. The focus will shift once the shared personal practice becomes a strength for the school.
