First I one to say that I am an Episcopalian and due not have a PHD in inter faith studies. That said I have spent time trying to understand other beliefs. The book tried to present a simplified version of the beliefs to give people a basic idea of the religion and why it appealed to different people at different times. There are whole books about just the differences between Christians and the book has to move on to other subjects so it was necessary to stay brief. Most universal religions will share some basic ideas like anyone can be saved and the need to change behavior. They also share a foundation of a starting person, Buddha, Christ, Mohamed. Islam follows the same god as the Christians and the Jews, so it is reasonable for them to
