PADM 302 Course Reflection

My primary goals for this course were to improve my writing skills in two specific ways. I wanted to be able to write with greater speed, but with apparent quality, and I wanted to be clearer in my writing. I had two strategies in mind to meet these goals. The first included becoming proficient at writing outlines and frameworks, which, I thought, would help me better adhere to my objectives for the papers I write. The second strategy was to learn methods by which I could become more concise in writing which would enable me to more powerfully present the points I wish to deliver in papers.
Generally, my overall goal for this course, as I stated in week one, was to “make my writing more orderly, less time-consuming, and more efficient overall.” As I reflect on the progress I have made, I recognize that I have had some success in meeting this goal, although I still have room for improvement. Thanks to our experience in composing outlines, my writing is better organized and more concise. However, I find that it is still more time-consuming to write than I would like. I would like to make more progress in simplifying the writing process

Garnett (1996) states, “While all communications involve three elements—the source, the message, and the audience—many public administrators consider only the source and the message” (p. 668). This point is a matter which must be continually considered by any public administrator. It is imperative that communications are geared to the audience for which they are intended in order to meet their needs. Unfortunately, no amount of communications will be effective if they are not understood by the audience for which they are prepared. This must always be taken into consideration in the communications for which I am

For the narrative, I had no problem writing, since everything was my own words. However, for the third essay, the research paper, it took time to find anything relevant to my argument, and moreover, it took time to actually like my topic, since it wasn’t what I wanted to do. The research took a large portion of my time, but the actual writing wasn’t too complicated. Although the increase in minimum word count became overwhelming at times, the work time in class allowed me to manage my time well, not needing to work a lot outside of school. I never procrastinated, and didn’t have to rush the night before it was due.…

I am concerned about my challenge that I face as a writer for several years I hope that this course can help me overcome this obstacle to become the writer I always want to become. The biggest challenge I face when I am writing is the lack of ideas. In addition, whenever I get a paper to write I am sure that I can write on the topic. Confident was the key emotion I felt upon submission of my personal narrative essay, The Lone Book. Though I felt extremely vulnerable for another individual--a stranger at that--to read something that I hold so dear to my heart, I was still rather confident in my piece and hopeful for a 100%. I felt the strength of this paper was specific to the topic I chose to write, a bit risky but, something unique; not a typical cookie-cutter approach. Additionally, I considered my choice of strong vocabulary words an improvement, resulting in another strength of the paper. Unfortunately, the weakness of mine, which holds true to most of my writings, comes with the improper use of grammar and punctuation.…

Twelve weeks later, my first college writing course completed, and to my pleasant almost surprise, I feel as though I have bettered myself in writing. If you look back at my Mid-term Reflection, walking into my first undergraduate writing class was a little unsettling. Was I going to be totally on top of everything the professor threw at us students or was I going to be completely unprepared? Rhetoric and Composition 103 was neither one nor the other, but a writing class that took what I knew and what I did not to create a well-rounded writer. By the time Mid-term’s rolled around, I could already see a change in my skills as a writer.…

My sentences were not effective as they were not properly constructed and were in immediate need of improvement. My writings once consisted only of sentences and no speech.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…
