In the beginning, Rainsford is thrown off his yacht into the thrashing sea where he must swim to the ominous, aptly named, ship trap island. When he finally reaches it, he must “...[drag] himself from the swirling waters… hand over hand” (217) to the top where jungle reaches right up to the edge. His initial challenge will teach him that there is more than one way to travel the island. This where he encounters his hunter, unbeknownst to him. General Zaroff is, initially, a friendly and generous man. Later, after revealing to Rainsford that he wants to hunt him in exchange for his freedom, Rainsford must use his experience and intelligence to escape him. He does so by crafting a “Malayan Man Catcher” out of a young tree and a heavy, dead log. When General Zaroff is injured via the trap Rainsford learns that he is susceptible to these kinds of traps so he knows to use them later
