Overcoming Adversity

Improved Essays
The adversities I have been challenged with in life taught me many lessons about myself, and who I want to become. I learned that hard work will always pay off, that sometimes you need to accept the things that you cannot change, and most importantly that you are never going through something alone. I have been blessed with an excellent pair of teachers over the past four years, and through their guidance I have learned to overcome adversity. Mr. Burdess, and Mrs. Bazyk have always taught their students that there is a lesson to be learned from everything, and that it's okay to lean on peers for support. It is my personal belief that my success in school is a result of the guidance I have received in overcoming the adversities that life has

Never Give Up I have faced much adversity in my life. The one time in my life where I feel I have faced the most adversity, was in basketball. Throughout my life I have loved playing basketball, but in ninth through eleventh grade in high school I started to hate it, because of all the adversity I faced. There were many factors that were tied up into all of this too. One factor was that I use to be so nervous playing, that it affected my game in a negative way.…

Even though telling students my failure story was challenging for me, in the end, I inspired them to excel academically. My story encouraged them to begin their college experience with high grades and not follow my example of having a 2.8 or any G.P.A that is considered low in their respective majors. In my everyday life, I tell my stories to friends who are struggling with their education and offer them the support they need to improve. I believe that telling my story of resilience has had a positive impact on people’s lives as it inspires them not to give up since…

I can be biased in my own stories and conclude that I have made it through the toughest times anyone could ever experience, but I know that’s far from true. I feel fortunate enough to say that I have not been through the worst, yet the experiences I have encountered over time with overcoming adversity has immensely impacted who I am and how I view the world. Just this fall of my junior year, I made a verbal commitment to play hockey for the Colgate University Raiders. To me, this is one of my greatest achievements in life, not just because it was my top school for D1 hockey, but because of the journey along the way that taught me to keep hope, an open mind, and an open heart. My sophomore year, I didn’t know a thing about Colgate; in fact,…

The day that would ultimately initiate the hunger for success was a day that I believed in myself and had faith in overcoming adversity. The week began in my freshman year when my close friends convinced me to try out for the Men’s Varsity Soccer team at my school. At the time, I had never played soccer a day in my life so, of course to anyone I was guaranteed to not make the team. Well, when I went to try-outs, I was struggling to keep up but I would always give it my all.…

Adversity is a noun that I am no stranger to. At the age of 11, I became very ill with Scarlet Fever. It was the summer of my 6th-grade year and I was looking forward to Middle School. I broke out in what my mother thought was a heat rash, couldn't keep any fluids or solids down, and was rushed to the hospital after fainting and throwing up blood with a fever of 107.07 degrees Fahrenheit. The doctors told me if I had waited any longer to be seen I would have surely died.…

Adversity is a difficult situation and I am very certain that everyone has had to overcome adversity at some point in their lives. I know I have. when I got admitted to study in the US I was ecstatic, however, my excitement dimmed when I realized that the scholarship I was awarded only covers my tuition and fees. I was at a loss because my parents had told me at the beginning of the application process that I had to get a "full ride" scholarship, that is the scholarship should cover the full cost of attendance or I had to forget about it. I struggled with breaking the news to my parents for fear of what they would say.…

A time when there has been strength in the time of adversity. A time when there was adversity in our state was when the young man Dylan Roof went into the African American church in Charleston and killed nine people. The people at this church did not know that when they came to church that night there was going to be a shooting at the church. Even though Dylan killed nine people and many families were hurt people still came together as a city and remembered the nine people that were killed. The whole city and others from different places came together on the Cooper River bridge and they held hands and sang hymns to remember the nine lives.…

Tragedies, misfortunes, and disasters can alter the course of one’s existence. While existing only a fifth of my projected life span, illustrations of adversity have begun to shape my life. Maya Angelou clarified adversity best when she stated, “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” Not a day goes by that I do not fail and succeed in some way, yet the lessons learned from the medley of failures and successes blend to create the ink in which I paint my Mona Lisa. My first adverse situation presented itself in the form of illness.…

For years, I’ve reflected on what qualities enable people to overcome adversity. I believe my journey exemplifies that one answer is a synthesis of initiative and resilience. From foster care, to a broken home, to military service, to two tours of duty in the Middle East, initiative and resilience have steered me to where I am today. I was born into poverty to an immigrant mother. When I was 2, my mother’s drug addiction caused me to be placed into the Los Angeles County foster care system.…
