Scoliosis When a human is born, there are seven cervical, twelve thoracic and five lumbar vertebrae's. Viewing the spine posteriorly in a patient with a healthy spine you will see that there is no curvature from right to left but looking at the spine laterally you will find that there is a regular "s" shape. " This allows for an even distribution of weight. The "S" curve helps a healthy spine withstand all kinds of stress. The cervical spine curves slightly inward, the thoracic curves outward, and the lumbar curves inward." (University of Maryland Medical Center, 2013) Scoliosis is characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. With scoliosis

With all surgery procedures, there is always risks that can arise. Common complications of a spinal fusion are the likelihood of hemorrhage and infection. More rare but life-threatening complications start with the possibility of paraplegia. This is a very rare case, but statistics shows that one in 1,000 people can suffer from this as a result of this type of surgery. (Spine and health, 2004) The first two weeks after surgery the patient should not participate in any strenuous activity such as work or school. The patient should refrain from any bending, lifting heavy objects and any extracurricular activity that could put strain on the spine. "Sports activities are not a specific treatment for scoliosis, but they are complementary recommended for maintaining general fitness and for their psychological and neuromotor benefits." (Borda, I. M., Ungur, , R., Irsay, L., Onac, I., & Ciortea, V., (2014 ) During this time the patient should have time to heal but physically and mentally. After the two weeks, the patient should return for a post-op appointment to change the bandages. After his first appointment after surgery, the patient won't return until a year later, unless there are any complications that arise during the recovery. (UCSF, …show more content…

My hips are uneven, my ribcage is twisted, and my waist falls differently on each side of my body. When I trace my fingers down my spine, I follow the winding path of three, 50 degree curves. For most of my adolescence, I strapped myself into a back brace for 23 hours a day. I remember the painful purple bruises from its tight, velcro straps, the embarrassment of being held aside at security lines, the misery of wearing five layers in the summer, and the taunts of one of my classmates who punched me and shouted, “Hard back! Hard back!”…

Contemporary studies of lumbar disc surgery document postoperative success rates between 49% and 97%7,8. Predictors of outcome include epidemiological, clinical, radiographic and psychosocial aspects7,9,10. Also the type of lumbar disc herniation (prolapse or protrusion vs. extrusion or sequestration) appears to be relevant for prediction of outcome, but not the anatomical position (paramedian, postero-lateral, intraforaminal and extraforaminal) of the lumbar disc herniation with the exception of central lumbar disc herniation11,12,13. Postoperative outcome of lumber disc herniation was considered successful in our study in 68% of patients. This number appears to be much lower as compared with the outcome after operation for the more common paramedian or postero-lateral disc herniations.…

The biggest differences between the vertebrae in the spine, are shape and secondary functionality. The cervical vertebrae are the smallest, they are the most flexible allowing the biggest range of head movement. The only vertebra containing no vertebral body, the axis, is located in the cervical vertebrae. Thoracic vertebrae are mid sized, and the physical shape of the thoracic vertebrae are the most rigid because they connect the ribcage and torso to the spine. Thoracic vertebrae are the only vertebrae to aid in protecting the inner organs.…

They found a significant difference for the position of the shoulder blade rotation in reference to the base of support and to the pelvis (7). As been mentioned before, and throughout the paper, the lateral tilt offsets the center of mass of the individual. The spine undergoes deformation because of the constant stressing of the soft-tissue around the area.…

I developed a “S” curved scoliosis, over the years as a child until I was 13 years old and the pain in my back infinitely increased to the point where it was unbearable. After being taken into the hospital for an examination I was told my spinal cord was beginning to curve to the right. My doctor believed it would be best to get x-rays for a neurosurgeon to examine. Once I got the results back my neurosurgeon, Dr. Knockels, noticed that my spinal cord was curved at a 45 degree angle. Dr. Knockels explained that having a spinal cord curved to that degree is very dangerous because it could lead a hunched back by time I reach my twenty’s.…

Relaxation of the body will decrease injuries during strenuous exercise or while playing sports. Decreasing the chance for injuries is another benefit from care. With regular care from a chiropractor the patient will have a chance of a more effective training, a decrease in the chance for muscle spasms, a reduction of pain or soreness and the will decrease the chance of an injury happening. Spine care will also speed up a patients recovery time. It won't take as long to heal after an injury as well as the recovery time after…

Scoliosis is a condition where a child has a curve to their spine, with an unknown cause. Often times this curve is seen as an S-shape or C-shape during an examination of the spine. There are two types of scoliosis: structural and nonstructural. Structural scoliosis is a curve along the spine that affects the vertebral movement of the spine. Nonstructural scoliosis is caused by an effect, not by the spine but results from poor posture, differences in leg length, or an uneven gait.…

The literatures published supporting chiropractic care are criticized for being mostly either anecdotal studies or non-randomized trials or funded or published by the organizations with the primary role of promoting chiropractic medicine which diminishes the rationality of those findings (9, 10, 11, 12, 13). On the other hand, most studies published to oppose chiropractic are better researched, independent and peer reviewed (5, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18). Also, bearing in mind the validity of the chiropractic vertebral subluxation theory, it is sensible to query the aptitude of chiropractors to make a true diagnosis and offer a correct treatment for childhood illnesses (14, 19). With no evidence to support that spinal manipulation of a child would correct vertebral subluxations and considering the potential damage to the cartilaginous growth centres from manipulation, there is no justification to use chiropractic manipulation healing in children (7, 14). Instead, this can delay the process of appropriate treatment based on correct diagnosis and may cost more to health care system.…

Health practitioners opine that unless it is a case of heart disease, hypertension or pregnancy, it is perfectly safe to try out the inversion table. However, care should be taken to pace the schedule and angle of inversion gradually in order to derive maximum and long term benefits. What are the benefits which can be expected after having embarked on such a treatment? The list of benefits is endless, the foremost being stretching of the body and realignment of the vertebrae.…
