There are numerous emotions that can be related to the word family- so many meanings and characteristics. Family is something we often hold close to as we move on through life, however, family does not have the strongest walls as some may think. It is very common for families to be split up, torn down, and thrown to the side in the United States. Robert D. Putnam, author of Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, explores the growing inequality gap in American society and its impact on children's opportunities. The class gaps have indeed amplified greatly and are still declining. To conclude, in Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, Putnam presents the belief that an expanding opportunity gap is significantly eroding the American Dream, as evidenced by pronounced disparities in familial stability and socioeconomic stratification. Putman uses many excellent examples throughout his book to demonstrate his ideas, especially with the family structure examples. It was done quite well and I would not have changed much. The readers and audience were able to grasp his point and connect to real life, whether it was through their own lives or examples they have seen during their day-to-day activities. Even if some could not relate, it is quite evident Putnam's claims are still very valid today and have even grown significantly as time went on. Putman did make a reference where he stated class advantages start in the womb and widen at every stage- I would somewhat disagree with this.
