Imagine a young man, brave and hungry for power, a man that would risk it all for his country, a true hero by nature; this man is Othello. Othello is no typical hero though. He is a hero full of admirable qualities and one flaw: a flaw that proves to be fatal. William Shakespeare’s Othello, is considered to be one of his most underrated plays and a classic tragedy. This play takes us through the ups and downs of Othello and ultimately leads to his demise as well as the supporting characters’. Othello’s tragic flaw, although argued to be jealousy or egotism, is actually his need for validation. This was undoubtedly for a few reasons, including the fact that he is an outsider, he is black, and having a good reputation was important at the time.
Although jealousy played a factor in the play, it wasn’t his fatal flaw. Othello was not a

Like a new guy in the office, he always looks for validation to make sure that he is doing a good job and that people still like and respect him. He wants people to be impressed by what he had accomplished and what he is capable of. After all it wasn’t easy to get where he was being an outsider and even harder being black. Unlike many of the other important people in Venice, Othello had to build his own reputation; he could not simply coattail his father or grandfather’s reputation. Therefore, he took great honor in it and tried to maintain it as much as possible. He knew that without it, he wouldn’t have much and would not be looked at as an important member of society. Validation from important people, such as Brabantio (Desdemona’s father), meant a great deal to Othello. He was quit pleased with the fact that “[Desdemona’s] father loved [him], oft invited [him], still questioned [him] the story of [his] life from year to year – the battles, sieges, fortunes that [he had] passed” (1.3.49-52) and that he was able to impress such an important member of the

Tim Blake Nelson’s 2001 “O” is an adaptation and modernization of the play Othello. “O” seems to capture the balance Shakespeare intended between portraying Othello as another, based on his race, and the problem of stereotyping a black character. “Even now, now, very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe.” (Act1:1 87-88) Along, with showing how personal motives can depict people who are unsecure about themselves or their relationships. The solution is to have Odin (Othello) question his position in society inwardly while appearing to be a very confident young man on the outside.…

Othello’s speech constructs him as different in another way, as an exotic and romantic figure. Admittedly this is a positive stereotype, not one based on physical appearance. William Shakespeare’s “Othello, the Moor of Venice” (reprinted in Greg Johnson and Thomas R. Arp, Perrine’s Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 12th ed.) is one of the most well known tragedies across literature. In the famous play, Othello is the Moor that came into the Venetian city as somewhat of an outsider and acquired a high rank so quickly that it bothered many other men at the time. In addition to this, at the start of the play Othello marries Desdemona without her father’s permission and this action angers a number of people. From the beginning of the play, it appears that while most people view Othello with great respect there are a few who are immensely envious and jealous of him. For the duration of the play, it is apparent…

When Othello defends himself to the Duke, he states that his wife loves him “for the dangers [he] has passed” and he loves her for pitying him (Othello 1.3.169-170). It is Desdemona’s openness that allows the strength of their relationship to be developed. When they meet in Cyprus, their love is further displayed. Othello expresses his joy of seeing her by saying that there is “not another comfort like to this” (Othello 2.1.184-187).…

Throughout his whole life, Othello has had to deal with racism and stereotyping to the point where he has internalized the negative perceptions of his blackness. Karen Newman, an English professor at Brown University, describes how Iago’s deception of Othello was was rooted in Othello’s own prejudices against his racial identity (133). Iago put words to Othello’s deepest insecurities about his interracial marriage, including the belief that the“fair” Desdemona would prefer a white man, and Othello is convinced that “Haply for I am black/ And have not those soft parts of conversation/ That chamberers have.../ I am abused, and my relief/ Must be to loathe her” (Shakespeare 3.3.260-265). Othello’s projected facade of “honorary white”, as University of Pennsylvania professor Ania Loomba labeled him, is starting to disintegrate; he starts to believe that he possesses the unrefined black stereotype instead.…
