Osteoporosis: Common Bone Disease

This letter is to provide you with more information about osteoporosis, calcium and vitamin D. Osteoporosis is a common bone disease that causes progressive loss of bone density. This causes the bones to become thin and weak, which increases the chances of falling. It is recommended to consume foods and/or supplements containing calcium and vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis. Calcium is the mineral that helps strengthen your bones and vitamin D helps calcium be better absorbed in the body.

It is recommended that women >50 years and men >70 years take calcium 1200mg/day (food plus supplement) and vitamin D 800 units/daily. Foods that are rich in calcium include dairy products such as milk, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, soy products and vegetables
