With transports there are two types, passive and active. Passive transport moves molecules and other substances across the membrane, but unlike active transport it does not use chemical energy. Instead it depends on the permeability. When using active transport molecules go from a high to a low concentration gradient. There are 3 ways for passive transport which are osmosis, diffusion, and facilitated diffusion. Osmosis is when water moves a selectivity permeable membrane. There are three types of solution of osmosis. One of them is isotonic solution where water crosses the membrane at the same rate. Hypertonic is where it loses water to the surroundings. Hypotonic is where water will enter the cell quicker than it leaves. Another type is facilitated diffusion which does not allow polar molecules to pass easily, but uses proteins to move quicker. The last type is diffusion where hydrophobic substances can pass easily through the cell membrane and travel down the …show more content…
But the cell is in a hypertonic solution. Glucose has to use passive transport to be transported through the cell by using facilitated diffusion. With facilitated diffusion it does not require energy but does include proteins to move the molecule quicker. Cholesterol is using active transport to be transported throughout the cell. Cholesterol is one of the specific molecules that receptor mediated will bring into the cell. Hypercholesterolemia is when the cell has brought into too much cholesterol, and over time more and more will be brought in. As a result, it will build up and be unwanted and excess to your body. It is unable to be transported out and there for you are diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia.
