Diaz does this perfectly with Oscar and Ybon. Ybon was a prostitute that Oscar fell in love with he would be over at her house all the time and talk to her almost every day when he was alive and in the Dominican republic. One day Oscar and Ybon run away to a beach in the Dominican Republic they spend a good week there before going back to her house, but it wasn’t a typical run away Oscar and Ybon had a relationship going there she would act like her girlfriend and eventually let Oscar have sex with her. In the book Diaz explains that Oscar didn't fall in love with the sex he fell in love with more of the “little intimacies that he’d never in his whole…” like combing her hair or her sitting on his lap these interactions made Oscar fall in love with her and go crazy for her. When they went back to the Dominican republic el captain came back and threaten Oscar to kill him if he came back and messes with Ybon. Oscar leaves and come back a few years later and when he does, he is kidnapped and killed in a cane field. What is even more insane that Diaz does it Oscar doesn’t care instead of crying and begging for them to no kill
