The Fathers of Modern Aviation were born in the heart of the American Midwest in 1867 and 1871. Their names were Orville and Wilbur Wright, two brothers that would go on to build and fly the first airplane. Their parents, Milton and Susan, were of English and German ancestry. Orville and Wilbur were just two of the seven children born into the Wright family. Orville was the second youngest and Wilbur was born just before him. Orville was quite mischievous in school and often got in trouble, while Wilbur was quieter and stayed out of trouble. They both started high school, but never received a diploma, due to the family moving around a lot. Milton, their father, was often gone, traveling as a bishop for the Church of the United Brethren. On a return trip home, he picked up a toy helicopter for his sons. Orville and Wilbur fell in love with the toy helicopter and wanted one of their own someday.
When Orville dropped out of high school, he started his own printing company. He enlisted the help of Wilbur and together they designed and built their own printing press.

They decided to open their own sales and repair shop called Wright Cycle Company in 1892. Business took off, and four years later they started manufacturing their own bikes. Their own brand of bikes were quite popular for both the excellent quality and fine craftsmanship put into each bike. Each week they put aside a small amount of profit to fund their growing interest in flight. While running their bicycle shop, engineers across the country were experimenting with the idea of flight. A Smithsonian Secretary made an unmanned-steam-powered-fixed-wing model airplane, a Chicago engineer tested a glider over the sand dunes of Lake Michigan, and a man died in Germany testing his glider. The Wright brothers didn’t let this scare them off. They continued putting money aside with hopes of one day starting their own
