As Muhammad Ali said, “Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams- they all have different names, but they all contain water. Just as religions do- they all contain truths.” I have known the various types of religions that we have in our planet since I started getting to know this world. Even though the numbers of religions are being increased, I strongly agree that all religions have their own truth for their followers. Christianity is the largest religion having over 2.4 billon followers in this world. In the society that I was raised in, orthodox Christianity was the main religion that was followed and Protestantism had a sparse number of believers. In the 19th century, Protestantism was introduced to Eastern Europe where orthodox followers are prominent by migrants from Germany. According to Barrett, in 1990, 342.2 million people were Protestants. After Protestantism was brought to the world, depending on the type of doctrine held in a church and the church order, Protestantism gave rise to its different branches called denomination. Nowadays, the number of protestant denomination is estimated to be 8196.
My visit to the International Ethiopian Evangelical church was a great opportunity to experience how their religious discipline looks like. Selam who is a protestant and my sister’s friend invited me to attend the Friday worship service which is given in their church. On Friday night, I went to their church with Selam and when we arrived, the only thing that I saw was a big rectangular house with multiple large green doors. The church was like a conference room full of single chairs arranged in four rows, with a well-formed stage covered by red carpet and containing instruments like guitar, drum, piano and saxophone which made me feel like I would be attending a concert.
