Holiday Foods to Avoid
It seems like only yesterday that we were basking in the warmth of summer, and now the holiday season is just around the corner. This time of year can be a tricky one if you have braces and there are definitely some foods that you will need to avoid. As the premier orthodontist in Squamish, here is a list of the foods that I recommend you avoid this holiday season.

Unfortunately, many of your favourite holiday treat foods are foods that you will need to limit or avoid altogether. Candy Canes have the potential to damage brace wires or even the braces themselves because they are a hard candy. Leave them for tree decorations this year.
• Peanut Brittle and other hard candies –these treats can damage braces or wires.
• Nuts – this snack can damage braces or wires or the hard pieces can get stuck between the wires, making it a nightmare to clean.
• Veggie Trays – avoid the hard veggies such as carrots as they can be very tough on braces.
Foods to Enjoy
It is not all doom and gloom, however. Although there are a few definite no’s when it comes to holiday treats, there are also some holiday favourites that you can enjoy without any fear of damaging your braces.
• Gingerbread Houses – Enjoy the gingerbread, just steer clear of any chewy and gummy candies and try to limit the hard icing that holds the house together.
• Cakes and Cookies – If they are fairly soft, they are a safe bet for your braces.
• Chocolate – chocolate in all shapes and sizes is fine. Make sure to enjoy chocolate in all of its forms this holiday season from ice cream to pudding to chocolate covered fruit.
