Organized crime is the ongoing of illegal activities operated by a group of people. They may have the same outlook on certain things, it can be social gain, religion beliefs, economic status, political views, or the same feeling of hatred towards a person or group. They share the same criminal conspiracy to gain money, power, and/or respect. It’s a sense of greed, organized crime can be conducted in urban areas, middle class, and in wealthy areas. He made education mandatory for their membership. He instructed his gang to go to school, learn trades, and develop talents and skills. His intentions was to become stronger in society. He changed the name to Growth and Development. To the outside it seemed they created nonprofit organizations that registered voters, a music label that helped children, peaceful protests to fight the closing of public programs, and clothing line (Larry Hoover Biography, n.d.). Hoover and the GD’s were making millions of dollars and living large within the prison walls. Correctional officers knew he was still involved in drug activity, so they began wire-tapping his private meetings, and discovered that he was running the Gangster Disciple group from within the prison system. The informants later revealed that Hoover's nonprofit organizations were actually fronts for laundering drug money. None of the proceeds for any of the so called charities actually went to helping anyone in need. On August 31, 1995, after a five-year undercover investigation by the federal government, Hoover was indicted on drug conspiracy charges and was sentenced to six life sentences. Founders were south central high school students Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams. They eventually started calling themselves “Crips,” and they say the gang was started to defend themselves against rival gangs in the neighborhood. Crips primary activities consisted of theft of money from everyday working people, burglary and violent assault (United gangs, n.d.). They identified themselves by wearing blue clothing, hats, or shoes and call each other “blood killas” or “cuzz”. The gang bought and sold drugs across the nation, they made lots of money selling cocaine. A rival gang killed Raymond Washington in 1979 and Stanley was in jail on multiple counts of murder. There are Crips in more than 33 states and 123 cities which are occupied by gang members (United Gangs, n.d.). This group goes with my definition because a group of teenagers came together to defend themselves by fighting other rivals.
