Chicago, nicknamed the “Windy City” and “Second City”, is one of the most loved cities in the United States of America and now home to hundreds of thousands of people, making it the 3rd most populated city in the U.S.(“Wikipedia”). Chicago is called the “Windy City” because of the cold gusts of wind that blow from Lake Michigan, it’s called the “Second City” because that’s what it was often called during the battle with New York. Chicago is an adored location because it is a major city for finance, commerce, industry and telecommunications(“Wikipedia”). It is important for us to know about Chicago because so many people live there, we would be affected if something happened to it and because it’s a crucial piece of the United States.

Before Chicago was so popular and well off it was a city known for its crime. In the 1850’s Chicago had no police force, when they did finally acquire a police unit there were only 60 officers(“Wikipedia”). People could do whatever they wanted, whenever they felt like it. Even before Al Capone, a famous American gangster who ran the streets of Chicago, started his illegal activities the city already had a reputation for crime(“Mental Floss”).
Chicago’s rival territories, the North and the East, started being rivals right about the time Al Capone started to dominate the streets of Chicago. The two rivals, even today, are only split by Madison Street(“Sam T Bertken”). The famous Saint Valentine’s Day massacre where six members of the North side were killed is now the front yard of a retirement home. Organized crime in Chicago has been around since the 1850’s and continues to be a problem for the residents of the “Second City”.

Since Chicago is visited by thousands of people each year it has to have some of the best landmarks. In Chicago what is considered a landmark is and what isn’t is based on the historical significance(“Wikipedia”). One of Chicago’s most famous landmarks is Willis Tower. Willis Tower is the tallest building in the Western hemisphere. It’s built 110 stories high(Choose Chicago). The Willis Tower is so high that Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin are visible from the top of the tower(Sam T Bertken). The famous bean shaped sculpture in Chicago, actually named the Cloud Gate is a well known and highly visited landmark in Chicago. The Cloud Gate is located downtown, otherwise known as “The Loop”(City of Chicago). It weighs 110 tons and is made of stainless steel(City of Chicago). Lastly the beloved landmark Jay Pritzker Pavilion. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is 120 feet high and is also made of stainless steel. It has a state-of-the-art sound system, so it distributes the sound throughout the Jay Pritzker Pavilion
