Orcas have been stuck in captivity since the mid-1900s. They were first captured from their ocean environment and moved to tanks that were small and modified for their conditions. John Hargrove a former SeaWorld trainer said, “...I was thrilled to be apart of the orcas’ lives for so long, I finally came to the realization that if I had to live their lives, it would be hell. Captivity is always captivity, no matter how gentle the jailer”(9). That is why, regardless of their ultimate fate, orcas should never, under any circumstance be bred, raised, or kept in captivity.…
As of December 2012, 138 reported cases of captive orca attacks upon trainers and visiting pedestrians at SeaWorld and other marine mammal parks have been recorded, three of which resulted in death. The number of reported cases of orca attacks upon humans in the wild is zero (Orca Home). PETA, SeaWorld of Hurt, the Orca Project, and various other organizations contend that SeaWorld 's detainment of orcas for the purposes of entertainment is abusive and violates multiple animal rights. The Orca Project has found captivity of these whales leads to whale to whale aggression, social strife, boredom, and various health issues that lead to their premature deaths (The Orca Project). However, SeaWorld maintains that captivity of these whales is not harmful to the…
The British also began seizing American ships and demanded that all American vessels had to check in at British ports before they could trade with any other nation. Historians tend to agree with the Americans; of the approximately ten thousand men captured from American ships, only about a thousand were actually British citizens. Britain claimed the right to board American ships and take into custody men who were thought to be deserters from the British navy. The British boarded the Chesapeake and seized four men, only one of whom was actually British.…
Nobody would like to be in a small place to live with 20 other people, well killer whales also known as orcas don’t like it either. Since 1961 orcas have been kept in captivity. Killer whales that are held in captivity should be banned, it shows that it’s okay to keep them in a small place with little freedom, hunters go all over the world to capture these orcas, when it comes to putting them in the habitat they are going to stay they start to fight with each other. The orcas are captured in a cruel way and they are wild animals, it’s going to be hard for them to adapt to a small place with little space to swim. For us the entertainment they show us is painful training for the orcas.…
Triptych Artist Statement The theme of my triptych is about illustrating how ambiguous the perception of one’s appearance can have about an individual’s moral standpoint of being a good or bad person as ultimately, there is no definite answer as they coexist in each person regardless of appearance. Throughout the three pieces, I depicted one generic human figure that did not feature any human characteristics. This enabled the triptych to appeal to a diverse group of viewers. Each piece contains an element or symbolism to help identify it as one of the moral standpoints of “good” or “bad”.…
The beautifully wise words of an American painter, Robert Motherwell, could not have described abstract art any better I strongly believe. He intricately and sophisticatedly describes the breath-taking style of abstract art as follows, “The function of abstraction is to get rid of a lot of reality. You start with as much richness as you want, and subtract, and then you arrive at the residue of essences that you’re interested in.” This description really allows the reader to visualize the artist at the canvas, slapping the paint on and then every so carefully stripping away the perfect amount to acquire the goal and portray the image in their brains. I love the amount of visualization Motherwell allows, and encourages the viewer to experience.…
Animal captivity is not a particularly new issue in modern American society. In American culture, most people do not view animals captivity is an immoral issue because they grew up watching animals being caged. The creation of zoos and oceanariums rationalize animal captivity since they produce entertainment for the society and it is being argued that they are made for conservation and education purposes. However, it raises concern in society when the issue involves the threat to human. In 2010, a top female SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed by one of the oldest captive male orca named Tilikum at SeaWorld during a performance.…
Every author, regardless of what genre, shares one common characteristic: the desire for their books to come to life in the mind of the reader. Authors try to achieve this goal in a variety of ways. For example, an author might use relatable, real-life situations to keep readers interested in the story. Others will add several twists and turns within the plot to play with the reader’s emotions and make them want to come back and read more. There are also several authors that use extremely strong descriptions to enhance the reader’s ability to visualize the story they are trying to portray.…
The traditional view of art has changed over time just as most things have. Naturally, the act of perception has differed opinions on what society considers as art. Dance, paintings, photography, drawings, music, literature, and sculpting, are what comes to mind when contemplating the aspects of art. The limitation to defining a word so opinionated leaves out room for self-expression. The traditional ideas of what is considered art should be broadened; granted, although not tangible, art can be seen through ambitions, emotions, and expression through appearances when not limited to the customary definition.…
The artist I chose to write about was Kathe Kollwitz and the art I chose from her to write about is The Widow, from War (1921-22), published in 1923. This piece is in black and white like most of Kollwitz’s pieces. The woman has her head tilted down; she looks sad and possibly depressed. Her hands are worn and rough and one can tell she has worked hard during her life. Her belly is large indicating the woman is pregnant.…
Johnson 1 The artist I selected from was Sister Mercedes because her artwork stood out to me and it more meaning than the other ones. Sister Mercedes was born Marija Mickevicius in Chicago. Marija Mickevicius study at Casimir Academy, DePaul University graduating with a Ph.B. degree. Later on she attended Rosary, Alverno, and Cardinal Stritch Colleges to study art.…
The colors used in the artwork, the materials used, and the expression or the face in the artwork help to make the artwork recognizable and a successful piece of work. The Myra use of color give the painting a dark mysterious effect about the painting. The colors in the painting are very cool dark colors that range from light grey to black.…
Artistic expressions, such as film, have the capacity to influence the perception of both our past and present. Mass media has been constantly validating how powerful ideas are. There is just a great amount of authority gained just by having something presented in the channels of media. All that it takes is a powerful production. The art form of illustration and film is effective in three things.…
Lighting is the most important element, because it is what illuminates the scene that the photographer is taking pictures of, adds color, and can help the photographer create certain compositions. Once one knows about the many different photographic styles and how lighting, composition, and color techniques are used can be taken even further in create one’s own unique and eye-drawing…
If it wasn’t for color maybe most of us would not like art at all. The colors provided in any work of art are totally to the discretion of the one constructing it. In regards to such important element, the colors that always get my attention are: green, orange and purple. We all know that primary colors are: blue, red and green. I believe with much legality as blue as the sky, red is the color of blood and green the color of nature.…
