Born into poverty on a remote farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954, Oprah Winfrey was born. As soon as she was born, her childhood began to take a turn for the worse. Not only was she able to perform well in education but also in performing arts such as drama and debate. Winfrey received a scholarship to attend Tennessee State University. Upon completing her freshman year in college, she began to start her media career. Oprah first television show was on the Columbia Broadcasting System as a co-anchor on the evening news. She was the first African American co-anchor on the show. After graduating from Tennessee State University she was offered to do multiple news updates and talk shows with WJZ-TV which was in Baltimore, Maryland as well as WLS-TV , American Broadcasting Company which was located in Chicago. Winfrey moved to Chicago, Illinois in January of 1984, and became a anchor on A.M. Chicago. Oprah changed the entire show from women issues to more of a controversial topics shooting her rating up to be better than a national talk-show host, Phil Bonahves. Within months the show was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show.
