They were often seen as weak African American women, but they proved to be more than that. They became strong and very independent women. Celie went through something as traumatic as a rape from someone very close to her and still became strong. That just goes to show you that don’t have to let your circumstances define the rest of your life, you can change the rest of your story. Sophia went through abuse from her husband and got a job she didn’t want but she didn’t let that define her life. Men played a big part of this novel. They caused most of the problems that the women in the novel went through. Most of it had to do with having control and dominance. Part of it also had to do with the roles that men and women had in that time period. However, that shouldn’t affect how you treat someone because everyone should be treated equally.Even though that wasn’t the case, the women in the novel took the negatives and became stronger women in the end. Something good can come from bad, even though it might take some time and even if things get too difficult and you might want to give
