Already, the President, governors, government organizations and researchers have started to take steps to understand and deter the abuse of opioid addiction. The Associated Press released a statement that President Donald Trump is promising to increase efforts to fight against the country's opioid addiction epidemic. President Trump has been quoted saying that his administration wants "to help people who have become so badly addicted" (AP, 2017). The president announced a new commission to fight against the opioid epidemic at an event Wednesday at the White House with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie leading it (AP, 2017). They believe that research is central to the prevention effort and to the development of improved treatments (HHS,2016). This includes a better portrayal of molecular pathways to pain, understanding the genetics to opioid addiction, and identifying biomarkers as well as other measures to conclude what kind of treatments will have the highest impact for individual patients (HHS, 2016). Currently, The National Institutes of Health(NIH) has its hands in more than 30 studies concerning chronic pain (HHS, 2017). There is also a demand to advance better prescriptions for pain that avoid addiction. This includes studying new and advanced pain treatments, that will lead to support the development of abuse-deterrent opioids, and for funds to develop opioid addiction vaccines (HHS, 2016). The FDA have cleared 6 prescription medications that are abuse-deterrent (HHS,2016). The HHS has also started to offer research to better implement clinical practices for pain treatment. This includes developing training and education programs to healthcare providers, researching how best to use non-opioid pain treatments, and ascertaining the best procedure to provide opioid addiction treatment (HHS, 2016). The NIH is currently funding 11 Centers of Excellence in Pain Education to help implement the development, evaluation, and distribution of pain management curriculum (HHS, 2016). They are in agreeance with the CDC guidelines for opioid medications to treat pain and will further the development of research into better treatment outcomes (FDA, 2016). The FDA will assemble an advisory committee of experts before approving any newly created drug application for an opioid medication that does not include abuse-deterrent properties in the drug. The Pediatric Advisory Committee will also make recommendations dealing with the procedure for pediatric opioid labeling before any new labeling is approved (FDA, 2016). The FDA will also refer to advisory committees on abuse-deterrent treatments when they produce innovative findings. Approval for any new opioid that does not have abuse-deterrent properties will have external experts as well as an opportunity for the public to give their input on pediatric opioid labeling (FDA, 2016). The FDA has also started to develop changes to its immediate release opioid prescription labeling to include more warnings and safety information, similar to the extended-release/long-acting opioid prescription
