The organization I have chosen to develop a communications plan for is the Ontario Renal Network (ORN). The ORN, a division of CCO, and an agency of the provincial government, manages the delivery of chronic kidney disease (CKD) services across Ontario (Ontario Renal Network [ORN], n.d.a).
The ORN structure consists of a headquarters located in Toronto, Ontario, that is co-led by a non-clinical Vice-President and a nephrologist Provincial Medical Director. Additionally, there are administrators (Regional Directors) and clinical champions (Regional Medical Directors) in each of the 14 local health integration networks (LHINs) who are responsible for the uptake and local implementation of ORN strategic priorities …show more content…
The most common therapy is hemodialysis and costs our system an average of $60,000 per patient per year (KFOC, 2012). Currently in Ontario there are rough 10,000 patients with ESRD (ORN, 2014). With rising fiscal constraints and a government pushing for efficiencies in the system, the ORN is looking for innovative ways to deliver the care that is needed, but in a fiscally responsible, efficient and effective manner. The ORP is the “provincial roadmap to how the organization and its network can work together over the next four years to improve the lives of those affected by CKD” (ORN, n.d.c). The ORP is divided into three main goals: 1) Empower and support patients and family members to be active in their care; 2) Integrate patient care throughout the kidney care journey; and 3) Improve patients’ access to kidney care (ORN, n.d.c).
Within each of the three goals there are clear strategic priorities, the most relevant being early identification and prevention of progression of CKD. In support of this priority, by 2019, ORN has committed to create tools and support for PCPs to identify and manage care for people with early CKD (ORN, n.d.d). The KidneyWise Clinical Toolkit initiative and its success directly aligns and will contribute to the achievement of ORN’s goals.
Objectives
The intended outcomes for this communication plan are to change awareness, understanding and behaviours of PCPs in Ontario. Below is a list of preliminary objectives to be further explored:
