For a small group of people, during their teenage years, these fears of innocence lost can be crippling, constantly affecting actions and moods (Participial phrase). Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, follows Holden’s actions over three days throughout New York City as he attempts to protect innocence everywhere, especially his own.…

The FogHorn Personal Response Life, a simple four letter word that we are all living in right now - probably the only thing that we have in common with other living beings in the world. Philosophers have pondered the meaning of life for millennia. Some say that the meaning of life is to find happiness, or to flourish. But what is happiness? A stoic named Epictetus goes into great detail to explain how one should find happiness. In theory, living by Epictetus’ guidelines of only worrying about things you can control would be worth it and make you flourish; however, it is impossible to do so because human nature causes us to focus on things that are out of our control.…

For this spiritual exercise I wanted to go to the roof and stargaze, but because it was raining, I watched the rain from my room. There were two quotes from Aurelius’s Meditations that I stood out to me when I read it, the first being: “How quickly all things disappear, in the universe the bodies themselves, but in time the remembrance of them” (1). I have always had the desire to leave my mark on the world. I want to go into politics, and specifically, become President of the United States. While I do not believe this will likely happen, it is something I aspire to be.…

“There’s More to Life Than Being Happy” is a journal article that was written by Emily Esfahani Smith. It was published on January 9, 2013. Its purpose is simply to explain to the audience that, ‘It is the very pursuit of happiness that thwarts happiness’ (Smith 2013). I very much enjoyed this journal article because after reading it I felt that I had actually connected to it. For example, a big topic that she focused on while writing this article, was that being happy dealt with “taking”, while living a meaningful life, dealt with “giving” (Smith 2013).…

Life is a very broad, difficult topic to speak about. Often times, people have conflicting thoughts on what they think the value of life is, what the point of life is, or what life is really supposed to mean. Should it be based off of materialistic possessions? Should who a person is or what they do with their life define them? Or should humans simply live as they desire and not put a price tag on another person until after they are dead?…
