I wrote my own book when I was nine years old. I called it "One Halloween Night "and it consisted of eighteen pages about two siblings, Jackie and Jake Reaze, who had to trick-or-treat alone because their mom was working and their dad was on a business trip. Elizabeth Mahem, who passed away 82 years ago (now, 90) in the Reaze family's current apartment, haunted the apartment that night. The last page of the story reads "THE END!!!!!! SORRY IT IS THE END!!!!!!" Since then, I have realized that English is not my thing. Neither is History. However, I came to realize that languages are my thing—my forte. I grew up speaking Spanish at home and learning English from my surroundings. I taught myself how to write in Spanish by ear. I have made friends from Brazil through sport stacking and, by communicating with them, I have picked up some Portuguese. I am studying French in school and Esperanto is my current Duolingo pursuit. JHU's extensive study abroad program would allow me to travel to a country where a language I am interested …show more content…

Stackers from Asia are dominating the sport. Is it in a person's DNA? Does the color of the cups matter? The color blue often represents sadness, while yellow signifies happiness. Does the brain process this while stacking? Studies show that sport stacking improves hand-eye coordination and reaction time, utilizes both hemispheres of the brain, and helps with concentration and reading. Parents have attributed the sport to helping their autistic children become more social. I would love to contribute to this research because I know others would greatly benefit from the sport if they knew how awesome it is. JHU's relentless dedication to undergraduate research would allow me to be successful in my

The place I struggled with the most was reading, for the longest time I struggled and stressed over learning how to read. Though there are many topics out there to choose from, I chose Halloween as mine. In my research, my main questions are from where and who Halloween first surfaced from and how it was then to what it is now. My thesis is still coming along but it is along the lines of “Halloween’s origin isn’t as ‘sweet’ as we have made it out to be“. My paper will be broken down into many different topics all ranging from: Where and who the ‘holiday’ started from, what was the reason, what was involved, how it traveled to different areas, how it changed to what it is today, what is the similarities and differences, and I will even talk about the ‘pros and cons’ of what it has been made out to be in society. I am hoping my research will show me more than…

Ever since I was born, I was raised by the same Latino family. I was taught how to speak both Spanish and English; Spanish was their primary goal mainly because it was our family’s main language. When I started kindergarten, no one else could speak Spanish so I really didn’t have any other choice but to stick to English. Later, however, we noticed that I got too comfortable with English. It eventually got to the point where I was beginning to become monolingual instead of bilingual.…
