The olm is just the common name for this animal. The animal is in the domain Eukaryota, along with any organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes. One step below this, is the kingdom which is Animalia. The reason this animal is in this kingdom is for that reason alone, because it is an animal. The phylum of the olm is Chordata. The reason it is in the Chordata is because the olm has pharangeal slit. They can take in water through their mouth and then release the particles in which are un-needed in the body through the slits. The head of the olm is lengthened and has a rounded snout. The tail is flattened and a lot shorter than the body. The olm has eyes but they are poorly developed because the animal is always in the dark, the use of their eyes is pretty much non-existent. Every olm has three pink external gills on each side of the gills. The skin of the olm is whitish with a pink look, due to the capillaries right next to the skin. It is easy to tell which olm is a male or female because of the translucency of the skin. Also during breeding the male has a larger and more swollen cloaca.
