I thoroughly enjoyed reading Old Yeller by Fred Gipson. It takes place in the Hill Country of Texas in the late 1860’s. It concerns the maturing of a young boy who must fight against his own worries as well as against the dangerous Texas frontier. The story can be considered on many levels, but it is first and foremost an exciting adventure for a boy and his dog.
(Chapters 1-3) Before Papa left he told everyone goodbye. He told Travis that he was in charge of all the work until he got home. They tore down the fence in the process. Then one of the bulls fell into a dump cart and started rolling down the hill. The fight ended when the dump cart crashed into a boulder at the spring. After that Arlis and Old Yeller caught a blue catfish in birdsong creek. It finned Arlis. After that Travis started getting wood for the fence. He heard rlis screaming. He ran down to Arlis but it was too late, a bear was charging Arlis. Then, from out of nowhere, Old Yeller shot out of the woods and started attacking it. They had a long fight before the bear left. They gave Old Yeller a bath after his heroic fight. Then they all went to bed.
(chapters 7-9) Every night the coons would steal the corn. Travis and Old Yeller had to sleep out in the cornfield. Then the skunks started eating the watermelons. A new man came to the farm. He said Old Yeller was his dog. He let Arlis keep him after a lot of begging and a dinner. Before he left he told Travis about the Hydrophobia Plague. Travis was pretty spooked about it. The next day he went and got the hogs.
(chapters 10-12) TRavis kept a piece of every hogs ear. Then he went to get more and he fell into a group of hogs and got really cut up. Then Old Yeller saved
