One way they are similar is through their devotion of their cultural traditions. For example,” After the wind had been drunk Okonkwo laid his difficulties before Nwakibie.”(pg.21) As this quote implies, Okonkwo honors the tradition of the wine drinking by respectfully waiting till the act is finished. Words like “after” and “drunk” show how Okonkwo waited till the tradition was finished to talk about his difficulties. Similarly Unoka demonstrates his traditional act differently. As taken out of the text,”..Unoka’s band and their dancing egwugwu to come and stay with them and teach them their tunes.”(pg.4) As signaled in the quote Unoka spread his tradition with others to keep it going and have more people participate. Words like “spread” and “teach” show how Unoka wants to keep the tradition going and to respect it. Both Okonkwo and Unoka respect their tradition even with many differences. Indeed, Okonkwo and Unoka are opposites in strength and success, they both respect tradition which is why they are original. Okonkwo became strong and successful because of his determination to not be like his father Unoka while he became a loafer and a fruitless man. Their belief in tradition is the key that connected them together not only by father and son but man to man.
