One of the key parts of a Strategic plan is the mission statement. The mission statement is important to inform others, such as investors and workers, on what the purpose is of the company and the vision of where they see themselves in the future. They should be challenging, measurable, strategic, and motivating. Office Depot’s mission statement is quite short. It reads: “Office Depot, Inc. is a resource and a catalyst to help customers work better. We are a single source for everything customers need to be more productive, including the latest technology, core office supplies, facilities products, furniture, and school essentials.
The company serves consumers and businesses in 57 countries with more than 2,000 retail stores, award-winning ecommerce sites and a dedicated business-to-business sales organization all delivered through a global network of wholly owned operations, joint venture, franchises, licenses and alliance partners. The company operates under several banner brands including Office Depot, OfficeMax Grand & Toy, Reliable and Viking. Office Depot and OfficeMax features products from brands consumers trust such as HP, Samsung, Xerox, Hammermill, Post-It, Keurig, Bic, Brother, HON, Scotch and Dell. One of their opportunities that they have is to expand. Recently they have talked about merging with Staples. Another opportunity would be to increase their social responsible image. They could easily do this by becoming more involved with the community surrounding each store. Another opportunity could be to follow the customer trends more closely. This being stated, they would stop closing stores and open one in college town and big cities where there are people who always need supplies live. And finally they could be looking at what their competition, like Best Buy, is doing and they could adapt some of their ideas to make the store
