Of Mice And Men Curley's Wife Analysis

Improved Essays
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck demonstrates through Curley’s wife and Lennie that dreams can break one’s heart, or provide hope. In the beginning of chapter five Curley’s wife tells Lennie about her childhood dream of being in the “pitchers”. She talks about how she could have stayed in those big hotels and had nice clothes. While conversing with Lennie, Curley’s wife says darkly “I ain’t used to livin’ like this. I coulda made somethin’ of myself” (88). This shows how heartbroken she is. She could have been an actress and her dream did not work out. Lennie also has a dream which he has explained many times previously. Very soon after Curley’s wife introduces her dream of being an actor, Lennie says “We gonna have a little place-an’ rabbits”

In a plot which is twisted throughout the whole story, the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, published in 1937, stuns its readers by taking them on a journey to the 1920s, where there was a severe economic depression in America, where hundreds of thousands became unemployed. The story is mainly told from the perspective of two ranch men, George and Lennie, to which the latter has caused the duo trouble due to the his lack of mental capability. Although George and Lennie are the protagonists, there is also an antagonist which plays a notable part in the story: Curley’s wife. She is a lonely victim who has been labelled due to her ‘awkward behavior’ of attempting to start a conversation with other ranch hands while they are working. Upon her introduction, she is characterized as being a floozy:…

In the novella entitled Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Curley’s Wife is neglected and excluded due to her attention-seeking behavior and lack of loyalty to her husband. Because she is a flirty, albeit beautiful, woman, the men who work on the farm disdain her and do not humor her in conversation. George remarks, “‘Jesus, what a tramp’... ‘So that’s what Curley picks for a wife’” (Steinbeck 32). This line exemplifies how men tend to treat women like Curley’s wife.…

Title In the novella, Of Mice and Men, the author John Steinbeck uses the character Curley's wife to depict the role of women during the time period. During the Dust Bowl, “women found themselves explicitly questioning [their] ideals of freedom and independence, that were critical aspects of their family heritage as the drought and dust storms threatened their livelihoods” (Grill). Due to the looming economic threat from the drought, most women suffered limitations to what they were capable of achieving; they were given no civil rights, were not able to go get a job to support their family, and were often viewed as property owned by their husband.…

There are some in this world who are considered outcasts, the wallflowers of society, to whom we neglect, vilify and abuse. And just as the poor mouse portrayed in the poem ‘To a Mouse,’ written by Robert Burns, was bothered by the outside world, the character Lennie, from the book ‘Of Mice and Men,” was also regarded with similar contempt and scorn, from those of society. In the poem ‘To a Mouse,’ the mouse represents Lennie from the book “Of Mice and Men.” As was the narrator, or speaker in the poem, representing George, as well as the men spoken about in the poem, were almost in direct reference to the men depicted in “Of Mice and Men.” The poem also depicts and illustrates some paramount, crucial turning points in the book.…

Throughout the novel and before the novel even begins, however, Lennie makes it nearly impossible for his dream to be achieved, ultimately leading to his death. Furthermore, it is seen that dreams can lead to a sense of false hope, though it is not a pleasant idea; Lennie is so set on living his dream that he fails to realize that the dream is impractical. Part of this could be caused by Lennie’s mental disability, but that still does not change the fact that Lennie’s dream never does come true. In addition, Curley’s wife tells Lennie that she always had a dream to become a movie star; she says, “Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes… An’ I coulda sat in them big hotels an’ had pitchers took of me…” and that she “don’ like Curley”(Steinbeck 89).…

We all have dreams but they don’t always come true “Of Mice and Men” is a story where this is partly true because not only does one dream not come true none of them do. The story “Of Mice and Men is a story where no dreams come true. Just a few examples of peoples whose dream didn’t come true Candy, Curley, Curley's Wife, George, and Lennie. I believe that Steinbeck was trying to show what the everyday life of a man and women was like during the during the depression and how no dreams ever came true, although he may have spruced up the story to make it more intriguing to the reader he also shows what the life of an average person was like during the depression. Curley’s wife is the most misunderstood character in the novel ‘Of Mice And Men’ this is clear when you study the book from her point of view. She is innocent, lonely and defensive in a way that readers see it as mean and tart. In real life we should not judge or exclude someone because of a first impression, yet that is exactly what happens in this book. Curley’s wife is innocent and only wants someone to love her, for example, after she is killed, Steinbeck writes, 'The meanness and the plannings and the discontent and the ache for attention were all gone from her face. She was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young'.…
