Odysseus Leadership Essay

Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or organization. This doesn’t mean you have to work unaccompanied. Being a leader is a big responsibility and from time to time you can’t do it alone. Many leaders have a partner or a crew to help them along their journey. This is another quality called joint effort, which Odysseus and his crew had great familiarity with. Odysseus and I are both leaders because we took control in problematic situations and always got the job done. My 8th grade year, grades 5th through 8th had an igloo building contest. Each class had to bring in as many empty milk jugs as they can and construct an igloo out of them. The difficulty was getting the milk jugs to stand up and stick together. Sailing off to Troy to defeat the Trojans, being trapped away from home for 20 years, and the countless obstacles amid he had to face, were way more consequential and mandatory to resolve. He was expected to be a leader to almost 1,000 men, and I was expected to be a leader to at least 20 kids. His journey contained many life or death situations like sailing through Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus shows his role in leadership by this quote: “Now I the strength of Hercules behold, A towering spectre of gigantic mould, A shadowy form! for high in heaven's abodes Himself resides, a god among the gods; There, in the bright assemblies of the skies, He nectar quaffs, and Hebe crowns his joys. Here hovering ghosts, like fowl, his shade surround, And clang their pinions with terrific sound; Gloomy as night he stands, in act to throw The aerial arrow from the twanging bow. Around his breast a wondrous zone is roll'd, Where woodland monsters grin in fretted gold: There sullen lions sternly seem to roar, The bear to growl, to foam the tusky boar; There war and havoc, and destruction stood, And vengeful murder red with human blood. Thus terribly adorn'd the figures shine, inimitably wrought with skill

In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates bravery as a trait of exceptional leadership when he fearlessly rescues his crewman from Circe’s potion. Despite seeing the “blinding tears” and “dry lips” of one of his crewmen, Eurylokhos, after returning for Circe’s hall, Odysseus decides to visit anyway and rescue his crewman from the unknown. When Eurylokhos arrives in a frantic state near the ship where Odysseus awaits the return of his men; Odysseus remains calm after he discovers his men are in danger, he “ [sees] nothing for it but to go” and rushes to the rescue (Homer 173, line 300-301). He “ [takes] the inland path alone” to arrive at Circe’s hall in the most effective amount of time where his men are held captive by…

Everett expresses that he is full of pride and arrogance based on the actions and choices he makes on his journey. Odysseus, the protagonist from the Odyssey, shows that he is controlling and full of pride when he accomplishes his goals and becomes a hero. Everett is a worthy representation of Odysseus because they are both arrogant, controlling on their journey, and loyal to their men.…

Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. First of all, Odysseus was an effective leader because he was intelligent. An example of this is in the Cyclops cave. He figured a way out of the cave and that was to give the Cyclops a lot of wine and made him fall asleep so they could escape. Another way Odysseus was an effective leader because he was courageous.…

Similar to Odysseus’ treacherous journey home, my odyssey through middle school had its moments of success and defeat, happiness and frustration, and absolute uncertainty. From being adrift on my makeshift raft in a vast sea of sixth graders to my final days in middle school, I have obtained many new traits comparable to Odysseus’. As a new sixth grader, I was optimistic and hopeful of the years to come, analogous to Odysseus’ confidence that he would ultimately return to Ithaca. Through seemingly endless hours of studying, I gained the ability to make sacrifices and prioritize in order to succeed. Odysseus also demonstrated this skill when making decisions and sacrifices in acute situations to benefit as many people as possible.…

In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates bravery as a trait of exceptional leadership when he fearlessly rescues his crew from permanently being transformed by Circe’s magical potion. After Eurylokhos, one of Odysseus’s crewmen, leads a search group onto the island of Circe, he returns from Circe’s hall so horrified he is unable to speak, with “blinding tears” pooling in his eyes (Homer 172, 272).
