A hero can be described in many different ways; a celebrity, an athlete, or even someone who does something nice. But in Homer's poem, “The Odyssey,” a homer epic hero is described as to be better than a normal human being and above the norm. The characteristics of the average epic hero are strength, loyalty, courageous, and smart. Odysseus is an epic hero as he fits all of these traits and many more. Although his curiosity and selfishness have gotten him and his crew into problems, Odysseus has always stayed loyal and courageous and would always try his hardest to succeed and keep moving forward on his journey. In Homer's book the “Odyssey,” Homer describes a hero as better than a normal human being and to be strong, loyal, courageous, and smart. Odysseus has done many things that make him hero, but Odysseus is very cocky and has gotten him and his crew into many problems and some being costly and that could have been avoided. However, no matter how cocky Odysseus gets and how many more things he gets himself and his crew into he never fails to try his best at saving his men and doing anything he can to be successful. An example of this is when Odysseus decides to go inland at cyclops island when his men advise him otherwise and they end up getting stuck in the cyclops cave. But, Odysseus being the epic hero he is uses his smarts and skills to escape the cyclops by stabbing it and saying “my name is Nobody: mother father and friends, everyone calls me Nobody” (Book Nine lines 394 – 399).
