Homer’s Odyssey is an epic poem that summarizes Odysseus's strenuous ten year journey home to Ithaca from the Trojan War. Odysseus is usually perceived as a selfish leader who causes an unnecessary, problematic adventure home for his crewman. However, several people fail to acknowledge the numerous times Odysseus effectively leads his crew to safety. If people continue to distinguish Odysseus as an egotistical leader, then they will overlook the numerous accounts when Odysseus risks his life for the sake of his crew. Throughout the epic poem, Odysseus demonstrates bravery as a trait of exceptional leadership when he fearlessly saves his crew from the Cyclops and Kirke and courageously ventures to Hades’ underworld.
