Book X The Grace of the Witch: Reading Synopsis
At the beginning of the story Odysseus continues his story about his journey for Alkinoos. He tells Alkinoos that after leaving Kyklops island, he and his crew came across the island of Aeolus, the god of wind. For a month Odysseus and his companions stayed on the island with the god, when it is time for them to leave, Aeolus presents Odysseus with a bag containing powerful storm wind. When he Odysseus and his crew set sail, Aiolos summons up wind to help guide them towards Ithaca. Soon they see the shoreline of Ithaca, but while Odysseus is asleep his crew members open the bag of wind, thinking that it contained gold and silver, and released the wind. He is then greeted by Eumaeus, who feeds him and tells his all the history of the land, his dead lord, about the suitors who came and took over. He then tells Odysseus that the suitors are planning and ambushing and killing Telemachus.
Odysseus, disguised as the beggar, ensures Eumaeus that Odysseus will return and punish the suitors. Eumaeus then changes the subject and asks for the old man’s background story. Odysseus comes up with about being a Krete, fighting in the Trojan War, gaining his fortune in Egypt, being a slave and becoming a beggar.
The beggar, Odysseus, also tells Eumaeus that during his journey, he heard that Odysseus is alive and well, Eumaeus is skeptical of this. Odysseus goes to sleep, but through a story asks Eumaeus for a cloak. Eumaeus gives him a cloak and tells him once Telemachus gets back, he will take him to him and will get a passage to where ever he need to
