Analysis of Argos Recognises Odysseus and “Argos” Greek Mythology has a very profound impact on the world of literature and art. Tales that were created to teach life lessons, that have gone way farther than to just teach morals. For example, the story of Argos portrays the idea of loyalty. Argos goes through a hardship,yet he still stays loyal to his master. Argos has been a mythological reference of many works in the area of the arts, including visual and textual works.Both Argos Recognises Odysseus by Theodor Van Thulden and “Argos” by Alexander Pope use the myth of Argos to show that loyalty unto the master will not always be granted so gracefully and,while some may forget the loyalty owed, others will not. When Homer became his favorite writer because he loved his work (“Williams”). Pope was widely known for his translations of Homer ,and is also remembered as the first full-time professional English writer, having supported himself largely on subscriptions fees for his popular translation of Homer and his edition of the works of William Shakespeare (“Williams”“poetryfoundation.org”). The scenes in the painting portray a very sad, yet happy moment. The dog “Fawn’d and kiss’d his feet,” he stayed loyal though his master left him behind. Odysseus’s loyal companion remained loyal ,but sadly, not long after he returned, Argos died.The poet uses these detail to portray that people that truly care will be loyal and therefore their masters whenever their return be.
