The concept of virtual reality has been around for a long time. The idea of experiencing a real feeling of presence in an imaginary world attracted people since the day it was born. We have seen this in fiction many times,. Many science-fiction books and films have some form of virtual reality. For example in the film Matrix, people are trapped in an artificial world while the robots are ruling the world. The novel Ready Player One also has a virtual reality system called OASIS. The use in medicine is already in progress. There is a study in which 16 surgical trainees were randomized to receive a VR simulation training before performing a laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the OR. The ones who received the VR training have shown a significantly better performance. [1] There are also studies about VR use in both physical and psychological therapies. There is a study about VR treatment of claustrophobia. [3] Another article is about the pain easing effect of VR. [4]
In entertainment, education, medicine or any other area, it seems like virtual reality will have a great impact on our lives. It also lets us to experience things we can’t normally afford, or get into areas that simply are not allowed to visit. Making use of the benefits of an experience without the difficulties and disadvantages will be an incredible development in every aspect of life.
