Ocean Oil Spills

Every year there are 37 million gallons of oil spilt into the ocean. Oil is made over a long process called fossilization, but it only can be found in some parts of the world, including the bottom of the ocean. There are huge ships called oil tankers that transport oil over the world’s waterways, unfortunately, accidents happen and the oil spilled into these waterways. Oil spills could be caused by poor management and the transportation of the oil. These oil spills can be very dangerous, very toxic to the marine life, and the oil will stick in the animal's fur or feathers. If the oil sticks onto the animal, volunteer workers will take these affected animals to a cleanup center where they will be washed and cleaned so they could go back to their

A benefit versus cost analysis of the United States Coast Guard Oil Prevention Spill program, concluded that efforts to reduce oil spills pays off. Resources allocated to safer working conditions and optimal maintenance suggest that reduced environmental damages could total 3.5 million dollars saved, 1.5 million saved in cleanup costs and approximately 1 million dollars of oil saved. Various ways to prevent oil spillage are the assessment of the technology used in transport and drilling, preparation of response training, improved surveillance of operations, and increased awareness of the dangers of all types of spillage. The primary technique is the mechanical containment and recovery of oil to collect, contain and recover spillage. The primary…

According to “Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time”, an oil spill once broke out near the island of Australia, and covered many birds native to that area ( Lewis 19). In “Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time”, the penguins started to get harmed by the chemicals surrounding their land, and many different ideas were used to help the birds survive. One unique idea included using sweaters to keep the birds from harmful substances. In the end, the sweaters were put into good use, and enabled the birds from the spill to grow healthy and be able to go back into the wild without any oil. In “The Amazing Penguin Rescue”, penguins living in the South Atlantic Ocean were also affected by an oil spill that had happened close to their home.…

Chapter Nine: Unwholesome Waters The Deepwater Horizon spilled over four million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. These oil companies learned they are far from being prepared for accidents such as this. Even though, this killed copious amounts of marine life, boats and other water vessels powered by fossil fuels kill more marine life each year with the chemical they leave in the water. Why not stop using oil?…

This oil spill caused Alaska to lose over 5,000 sea otters and 250,000 birds. With Roland's help they managed to save 300 sea otters. In his book he talks about how they go out in small boats for around two weeks at a time, following the flow of oil. When they would see a sea otter lying on shore shivering, they knew right away the seal was covered in oil. As fast as they can they would get out of their boats and attempt to trap the otter, and then scoop it up with a net.…

The greatest anthropogenic threat are oil spills. Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters do not have a layer of blubber to keep them warm so they depend on their layer of fur, which is the densest fur in the animal kingdom. However, when oil spills and contact the sea otters, their fur lose its insulative property and thus they are more sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. Moreover, the sea otters are at risk of gastrointestinal disorders because they ingest oil while grooming. Following the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound, it is estimated that the number of Sea Otter death ranged from 2,650 to…

The Exxon Valdez spilled 42 million liters of crude oil and contaminating 1,990 kilometers of shoreline. The oil killed a total of about 253,000 of wildlife. It killed 2,800 sea otters, 302 harbor seals, 250,000 seabirds, 250 bald eagles, and 22 killer whales (Shigenaka). Some scientists estimated that 35% of the spilled oil evaporated, 40% was deposited on beaches within Prince William Sound, and 25% entered the Gulf of Alaska where it either became beached or was lost at sea (Shinnefield). Some might think the aftermath ended there, but scientists predict it will affect the area for twenty plus more years.…

4 the prevailing currents carried the spill 40 miles to the island and shoreline in the south west. The long-term effects were there were 2 chemical dispersants and bioremediation that was unknown and was used minimally (Schlager 5). The dispersants removed the oil from the water to break the oil into tiny droplets which were descended from the surface of the water column and rapidly released the hydrocarbons to get oil to serve toxics to hit the marine organisms for 6 hours. Considering the better use of the dispersants of the shore the marine life has densest the exits to the diversity of opinion. After three days the Spill Coast Guards authorized the use of dispersants of a gale forced wind by blowing the VP and churning the oil that would no longer be treated with dispersants (Schlager 5).…

Exporting products is truly beneficial for every country's economic development. Canada having the third largest volume of oil reserves in the world, export oil through pipelines by transporting it over long distances (Asia Pacific, 2010). Recently, eight major pipeline projects are being proposed in Canada to transport increased oil production to the market (Joseph et al., 2015). Many economists saw these projects as something that would provide economic benefits to the country such as providing access to new markets (Minardi, 2013). However, many environmentalists and activists saw these as something that will raise the risk of a major oil spill (National Post, 2011).…

For example, “when oil spills, every person who makes a living from the ocean feels the effects. Fishers, shrimpers, and dockworkers sit idle when ocean waters are too contaminated to catch edible seafood. Oil-marred beaches disrupt the tourism industry, slowing business for hotels, restaurants, and shops” (Mooney, 36). Not only are these rigs dangerous to the workers on them, but also to the homes, businesses and tourists living along United State’s coasts. In a survey conducted on December 4th, 2015 the 25 people surveyed knew a total of 54 people working either in a fishing industry or at a shop or business along an American coast.…

According to the article “How we Ruined the Oceans,” by the Week, the human race is destroying the world’s oceans by the overproduction of plastics and overfishing, and the the only way to counteract the effects is to join together and try to fix the underlying problem that affects every living thing on the Earth. Humans are overfishing the oceans, which causes a significant imbalance in the food chain. The oceans are progressively getting more polluted, and it is at the point where it is virtually impossible to remove all the plastic harming oceanic ecosystems. Although some scientists say it's not too late to reverse the effects, as long as climate change is acted upon with great urgency.…

Oil spills, such as the devastating Deepwater Horizon oil spill, can dump millions of gallons of crude oil into the ocean causing long term damage. The oil spreads out over the surface of the water, creating a deadly coating. The coating of oil kills off the aquatic life and pollutes the beaches when washed on shore. Seagulls, pelicans and other aquatic birds that spend a lot of time in water are affected the most. When oil sticks to the bird’s feathers, the oil causes the feathers to separate making it less water proof and exposing the bird’s sensitive skin to the environment.…

Oil Spills and How They Affect The Environment Oil spills, no matter how small or large, effect the worlds environment by their destroying and poisoning any habitat they come in contact with, mainly the water though. These spills can be devastating because they disrupt what we know as the food chain. The food chain starts with producers who are ate by small animals which are ate by larger and larger animals until the top predator is reached, humans. Oddly enough, humans are the main reason the food chain is being destroyed. In our fight to reach economic prosperity we rarely take in consideration the environment, which is partially what life is based on.…
