Ocean Acidification Deepwater Ecosystems

Decent Essays
Ocean acidification is a danger to all underwater ecosystems. The slight change in acidity makes animals have a hard time building stronger parts out of calcium carbonate, because that is what is disappearing. Scientists predict that in the year 2100, the pH will have dropped by 0.3. This may not seem like a huge decline, but this much will cause polar pteropods to disappear altogether. Phytoplankton and zooplankton will have a similar fate, but later, because they are formed by calcite. Ocean acidification will also cause non existence for coral reefs, such as the Great Barrier Reef. The oceans are becoming more acidic, and the outcomes are at the point where they are notably inevitable.

For years this planet has been undergoing vast changes in its environment, wildlife, and mostly our oceans. The acidifying of our oceans is because of all the Carbon Dioxide that is absorbed by seawater. A chemical reaction that occur which reduces seawater's pH. All of the Carbon Dioxide is being put into our atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels. Calcium carbonate minerals are the building blocks for the skeletons of shells of many marine organisms. In certain areas where life now congregates in the ocean, the seawater, is supersaturated with calcium carbonate mineral.…

Scientific Validity of “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” Coral reefs are having a problem with pH levels and they are dying some places around the world right now, because of it. This is not only affecting the coral reefs, but the animals that live in them and survive with them. There is a Scientific Study called “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” which discusses the behavior and neurological impairments of coral reef fish due to more CO2 and acidic levels of pH. More CO2 causes lower levels of pH and makes it more acidic and very dangerous for fish. Overall this is a poor scientific article, because it has only one good source…

The mass loss of an organism can affect the ocean’s ecosystem. The small organism that died off due too acidic water, can affect the ocean’s food chain. A larger organism, such as a fish or sea lion, would lose the food it needed to eat to survive. Along the line, the die off could also affect humans. Less fish could affect people whose livelihood is fishing due to the fact that the fish have died off because they aren’t able to obtain the necessary nourishment, or because they’re sensitive to the change in acidity.…

Air pollution contributes greatly to global warming Global warming also contributes to the phenomenon of ocean acidification. Ocean acidification is the process of ocean waters absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fewer organisms can survive in warmer, less salty waters. The ocean food web is threatened as plants and animals such as coral fail to adapt to more acidic oceans.…

Between 1800 and 1994, the oceans had absorbed around 48 percent of the total amount of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels (IPCC, 2014). Therefore, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the ocean would have increased considerably since then, and with the increased production of carbonic acid which releases bicarbonate and hydrogen ions, the amount of carbonate ions which are necessary in the creation of coral shells and skeletons decrease significantly. (Australian Government, n.d.) Therefore, more acidic seawater impacts coral significantly, dissolving their shells and skeletons, and hindering their ability to absorb calcium carbonate. Ocean acidification not only impacts coral and the animals that rely on coral as their main food source, but the animals that make calcium carbonate shells such as snails and clams (How does climate change affect the reefs?,…

Topic B: Ocean acidification and coral reefs Introduction • Ocean acidification is a reduction in the pH of the water in the ocean as a result of increased carbon dioxide uptake in the ocean due to humans burning fossil fuels at such a high rate. • Unless drastic changes are made in regards to CO2 emissions, the rate of ocean acidification is projected to significantly increase over the next century. When coral reefs disappear it will cause a chain reaction affecting people all over the world. "We are seeing an overall negative impact from ocean acidification directly on organisms and on some key ecosystems that help provide food for billions. We need to start thinking about the risk to food security" (CNN World). People don’t understand the severity of what we are doing to the ocean and the world. If no action is taken and we continue on with our daily lives not caring about the long term effects of our actions then it could wipe out entire ecosystems or entire populations of sea…

An unknown fact to most people is that our oceans are one of our main sources of oxygen, and also one of our main absorbers of carbon dioxide. However, due to the increase in carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, the ocean absorption rates have also gone up, leading to our oceans becoming more acidic. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, our oceans absorb a quarter of the carbon dioxide that we release into the air, which is equivalent to about 2 billion tons per year (PMEL, “Ocean Acidification”). With all this absorption, the typical ocean pH has risen to 8.1, an increase of about 30% over the last 200 years.…

Have you ever just turned on the television and saw on discovery channel or something the Coral Reefs? They are beautiful aren’t they? That is why we cannot let them die off because of Acidification. Acidification is when too much carbon dioxide gets into the ocean which increases the acidity of the water and lowering the ph. I know other issues may be talked about more but if we look really close at acidification, acidification is a huge aftermath of those issues.…
