Occupational Therapy Personal Statement

My entire life I have been surrounded and encouraged by people to care for others. For instance, my mother works in health care as a hospice and home health aid. When she gets home from work I can tell in the way she talks about her occupation that she is thrilled to help her clients live happier and healthier lives. This has led me to want a career that would directly work with people, and watch patients grow independently. In high school I did some research to what careers that would offer just that. In my process, a representative from The College of St. Scholastica brought occupational therapy to my attention. So, that night when I got home, I further researched occupational therapy and it was clear to me that OT would be a good fit. To further inspect if the occupational therapy field was right for me I started observation hours just a week or two after high school graduation. …show more content…
This patient suffered from a stroke that occurred about 8 years ago. In result of this stroke she had troubles with fine movements in her right hand and forced herself to use her left hand. After such a long period of time not having the control of her right hand she converted herself to being left handed. Further, every Monday the occupational therapist would test her strength and timed movement. Over the course of the week her grip strength increased by several pounds. Also, her timed task of manipulating objects in her hand decreased. After the tests were finished the occupational therapist would share with the patient her results. Just the look on the client's face said it all. She was starting to gain control of her right hand again and using it again for everyday tasks such as eating. This was remarkable to me that over such a short period of time she made life changing improvements and would continue to increase her

I believe that being kind and caring to others is absolutely crucial in ensuring that the people around us feel welcomed and happy. Along with an underlying desire ‘to help’ people, I am pursuing occupational therapy as a career because it involves a perfect blend of creativity and science. As a double major in psychology and rehabilitation psychology at the University of Wisconsin Madison, I heavily studied evidence based practices and empirically supported research, especially while working in a psychosocial oncology research lab. I enjoyed learning about valid, reliable assessments and conducting formal developmental assessments in an infant classroom. Throughout my undergraduate career, I was grateful for the creative opportunities I had, such as developing novel inclusive activities and participating in the creation of individualized Applied Behavior Analysis therapy…

My passion for occupational therapy began when I first realized I wanted to better understand those that were not as fortunate as what society would call the norm. Within my family, two young male cousins have been diagnosed with autism. I wanted to better understand what type of therapy they were receiving. I only knew of one, physical, but when I was given the opportunity to view an occupational therapist at work, it allowed me to discover the path I needed to help those in need. Though, my initial degree plan was to enter the nursing program, I yearned to learn more about Occupational Therapy.…

 After college, I’ve struggled to find my place in the community, while I’ve worked in different fields that indirectly related to my Psychology degree. However, it was my position as a pre-school teacher that has inspired me to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy  While working as a pre-school teacher, I found myself constantly being challenged; at the same time I was delighted that I was able to unitize my psychology background. I’ve worked with children that were having difficulty adjusting and participate in school activities, because they didn’t speak English. I’ve worked with children that have learned behaviors that needed a different approach to re-introduce them into group activities. I also had a rare opportunity to work with an Occupational therapist, together working side by side with a child that has a physical disability.…

As a military veteran of ten years, my goals for a career in occupational therapy is to continue to serve those in my community, especially members of the military and their families. Throughout my career in the army, I have been exposed to countless challenging circumstances in which I steadily adapted to, such as continuously changing environments, extensive field training exercise, and parting my family for two tours to Afghanistan. Throughout these events I candidly believe the connection I made with my fellow service members allowed me to not only maintain but excel through these hardships. I have chosen occupational therapy to be my vocation because the human body never ceases to amaze me. Whether it may take a little encouragement or a reality check, the minute humans desire self-improvement miracles can happen. I find this aspect admirable especially among our elders, which is the reason I want to pursue occupational therapy in rehabilitation. During my volunteer hours, I witnessed a frail, elderly woman who went from denying any possibilities of improvement, to getting in her car only using her walker. While the health science field can be tedious and frustrating, there is no greater joy in the world than seeing the determination and perseverance of your patients.…
