They then got their breakfast off the back table while Ms. Freyta read the announcements and took attendance. The students were all seated and patiently awaiting their lesson. Once Ms. Freyta finished taking role and breakfast was over, the students began their math lesson. They started out doing sample problems on the projector. Ms. Freyta walked through each of the problems and asked students questions along the way. Once she finished doing her whole group lesson, she had some students (I am assuming the lower level students.) go to the back desk where she worked more one-on-one with them to help them get their work completed. Ms. Freyta asked a few to relocate, however, it did not seem to be very effective. During my time in her class, I witnessed her use two different techniques to try and get the students on track. The first was “1, 2, 3, eyes on me. Student’s reply with 1, 2 I see you.” This was great in theory, however, I noticed that yes students said the response, they did not give her their attention. I feel like this technique should have been practiced more to get the desired response out of the students. The second technique she used was “class, class. Student response: Yes, yes.” Once again, I felt that this did not truly get their attention. They would respond and go right back to talking or doing what they wanted too. Overall, the class was not very loud, just not on task. I did notice that the entire school uses a system of moving up or down a behavior chart, which really makes the students excited when they move up, but seemed to publically shame them when they had to move down.
