One of the biggest price increases would be the price of healthy food. In a documentary called Food Inc. that was following the USDA’s food production, they also featured a family from Texas who did not have much money. The documentary showed this family going through a drive threw at a fast food restaurant. While they were getting the food, the mother said this “I feel guilty giving it to them. When you have only a dollar to spend, and two kids to feed, you either go to the market and maybe get one item, or go through a drive threw and get 2 cheeseburgers. This is what is going to fill them up, not one item at the market.” Food all depends on families’ incomes. Most families have a set limit on what they can spend on food, and it is easier to spend money on a lot of convenience foods rather than a little bit of healthy food. Price can also go another way. According to an article written by Carolyn Dimitri and Stephanie Rogus, “Prices also relates to the ease of access, quality, and family preference.” Basically this means that if the family does not like it, why buy it when they wont eat it. There are many opposing sides to this argument between the link of obesity with fast food. Another way to look at it is it’s not the fast foods fault for the obesity epidemic, it is how much American’s eat. Time and time again, it has been proven that American portion sizes are out of control and don’t match the rest of the world. In a documentary called Fed Up, which follows the lives of a couple of obese children, there is a specific scene where a girl is eating in her school cafeteria. The lunch lady said that “It’s all about the choices they make. We can’t really make it for them, and I feel bad giving this food to them” (Fed). There are different items from fast food places like burgers and fries from McDonalds, or pizza from Pizza Hut in this cafeteria. In addition to this, they also serve a “healthy” meal, but most of that meal isn’t really served. There are healthier and smaller options out there in the world for people to chose.
