All too often, many people living in poverty, just above poverty, and even some in the middle class are not able to afford quality, organic foods that are locally grown and made due to exorbitant prices. The prices for pre-packaged foods, produce grown with toxic pesticides, and unhealthy snack treats such as sodas and snack cakes are cheaper and more readily attainable than organic and/or locally grown and made foods. For example, a group of students and Colby College surveyed prices of various organic food and conventional food prices at five local Waterville grocery stores ranging from produce like lettuce to canned tomatoes and yogurt. Their findings showed that in every case of price, the conventional was cheaper than the organic; similar studies have been done in many college classes, laboratories, and supermarkets across the United States (Pillsbury). In addition to this there has been a recent study conducted by Newcastle University, the largest of its kind, that shows organically grown foods are indeed healthier as they hold more nutrients and antioxidants than conventional produce.
