While nutritionists are interested in health beliefs in regards to food, nutrition and physical activity, they must also be interested in why and how people make choices on a regular basis. It is very evident food is often eaten the most in social contexts and involves negotiations within themselves or with outside parties. Being able to draw on theories is critical to gain full understanding of why people eat and how they change. Main parts to a theory are the constructs and variables. Constructs are mediators of the change. Variables are how the construct should be operational and how it should be measured. Theories are the way research can be tested and practiced. Nutrition education uses theory to test various skills discussed in research and lectures for patients. It is used to test skills of “how to” knowledge and “why to” knowledge that the patient has gained. This model is used as framework to understand individual’s psychological intentions, beliefs, to take action regarding their health. Constructs that can be used for this scenario would be perceived benefits and cues to action. By using these constructs, there will be a raised awareness and motivation to take action and reduce risk of heath conditions. The scenario given to us is: a group of women who have recently given birth and would like to loose weight. They are from the middle class and live in the suburbs of a large city. Having a newborn at home does not leave these women with much time to purchase and prepare food but they want to make sure they eat a healthy
