The growth and development of the human body is incredible considering it comes from the microscopic nutrients that are eaten. The nutritional composition of food is what makes a person’s body healthy or unhealthy coinciding with activity levels. People who compete in sports or exercise regularly understand nutrition is important to being active. Throughout history people have been perplexed by the optimal function of the human body or performance. It is human nature to want to rise above the competition and compete at a higher level. This review will claim that the timing of nutrition affects the speed, power, and agility of any athlete who looks to participate at top-level.

Every nutrient that enters the body is divided into two categories—micronutrients and macronutrients. Micronutrients are nutrients that are necessary in tiny amounts, (in comparison to macronutrients) and be split into two groups, vitamins and minerals. Despite the lack of quantity need the body has for micronutrients, they are essential for growth and regulation of various functions of the body. However, micronutrients are not the main focus for this topic. Macronutrients are considered the energy-yielding nutrients and must be consumed in higher quantities. These nutrients are divided into three categories: fats, proteins (PRO), and carbohydrates (CHO). Fats are essential for living; they serve as body insulators to maintain a stable safe body temperature, absorb vitamins, and most notably, provide energy for demanding activities (storage form found in adipose tissue). PROs have innumerable functions of the body. A few include transport PROs that carry hormones through the blood, serve as antibodies to fight infection, but most importantly for this review—repair damaged muscle cells in order to perform better. Carbohydrates are the main energy-yielding nutrient. Without CHOs, the human body ceases function. There are two main forms of carbohydrates: glycogen and glucose. Glycogen is the storage form of sugar found in the liver and muscle tissue (different from adipose tissue). Glucose is the …show more content…
As mentioned before, nutrients play a specific and functional role in the body as it develops. Lacking in one nutrient can spur many unwanted symptoms. For example, an important nutrient to bone health is calcium. Not only does calcium build strong bones, but it is necessary for muscle contractions. A lack of calcium in the muscle or bone can severely impact a healthy life where bones can break easier and muscles do not contract as well. A healthy body must receive the proper nutrients in order to have the appropriate development needed to fuel an active
